Ross LogoPart of the purpose of this blog is for current and potential Your Marketing Guy clients to get to know who I am.

A common quote I like to use is this one:

“People do business with people they know.”

My hope is that the content of this blog sheds some light into who I am and by reading my thoughts/feelings people will get to know me.

In this post I’d like to share a dream of mine, in hopes that it sheds some light into what I value from an educational standpoint.

I earned my undergraduate degree from the Haworth College of Business at Western Michigan University. Ever since I graduated I have had the desire to go on and get my MBA. However, I really don’t have an interest in getting an MBA from Western Michigan or any other middle-of-the-pack university; my only interest is to earn an MBA from The University of Michigan.

The biggest reason for this selection is because the Stephen M. Ross School of Business is a perennial top business school in the country and by far the best in the state of Michigan.

I don’t know exactly what this says about me, but that’s my dream…

Why don’t I have a desire to earn an MBA from anywhere but the top business school in Michigan? Maybe it’s because an MBA is not a mandatory thing and, in my eyes, to put the effort into something of little value (middle-of-the-pack MBA program) makes no sense. Or maybe it’s my desire to be attached to something that people respect and look up to.

My other thought is that I search long and hard to find the best marketing books, the best business brains, and try to soak up all I can from the best and brightest sources. I view U of M’s MBA program as being one of the top sources for further education.

I wouldn’t read a business book that doesn’t expand my knowledge and make me think.

I wouldn’t want to earn an MBA from a university that doesn’t expand my knowledge and make me think hard.

Earning an MBA from U of M is an interesting dream of mine and someday I hope to make it a reality. In the meantime, Ill get back to my not so prestigious task of diaper changing.

Tommy

For those blog readers waiting patiently for an update to this post, here it is…

Thomas William Hunt, born 7/7/06

Mom and baby are doing great. Here’s is a play by play of the birth that I sent out to family and friends:

We’d like to introduce you to our beautiful son…

Thomas William Hunt

Born on Friday, July 7th at 11:35 pm at the University of Michigan Hospital

8 lbs, 2 ounces (1.8 ounces to be exact!)

A long and healthy 22 inches with some seriously long fingers and toes.

Tommy & DadA quick recap:

Mom standing over dad (Me) and waking him up at 5:50 am Friday morning asking if it was time for him to get up for work. Dad thinking to himself, “shouldn’t she be in bed, what’s the matter with her?” (she was up at 4:30 am having some minor contractions…)

9:30 am - Water Breakage, Phone call to dad, Speed Limit Breakage home to Howell.

Arrive at the hospital around 11:30 am, progress slowly but surely through the afternoon and evening. Some pitocin (inducer drug) here, an epidural there (those are wonderful…)

8 cm, 9 cm, 10 cm…push!

30 minutes later, we were looking at him and feeling very blessed.

We’re plenty busy here at the house (got him home at 3:00 pm today/Sunday) and are having a blast with our little guy!

I have yet to find a business that is doing everything right.  There is always room for improvement.  Most of the time there is room for HUGE improvement.  You can have a very successful business and still be very far away from your full potential.  I’ve seen it.

You can read the thousands of books that are out there about business planning, marketing, sales, and web sites.  Bottom line is this; learning about these topics won’t change your business. Saying, “Oh, that sounds like a good idea!” won’t change the bottom line.

IMPLEMENTING good, quality ideas is what will improve your business.  It takes work.  It’s sometimes tedious and repetitive.  But IMPLEMENTATION is what it’s all about.

It’s amazing how one change – implementing one good idea, can change your bottom line and improve the outlook you and your employees have on your business.

These “ideas to implement” may come from you thinking about your business and how to improve it, they may come from talking with colleagues and co-workers, they may come from an organization you belong to, a book or magazine you have read, or MAYBE…THIS BLOG.

When you get done reading the posts in this blog and you like what they say….ACT.  Don’t sit on them and keep them warm.  Don’t add them to the end of your “Great Ideas to Implement!” list that is sitting on your desk.  ACT on them.  IMPLEMENT them.  Most of the time it takes work, but the reality is - that’s what it takes to be successful and to improve.

That’s some of my, “Telling it like it is” talk.  If you like what you read, then visit this blog often and chime in by leaving comments, or e-mailing me (kyle@yourmarketingguy.com.)  Thank you for your visit!
