According to comScore, in June 2006, the monthly share of online searches were distributed as follows:

Google Sites: 44.7%
Yahoo! Sites: 28.5%

Those two engines account for 73.2% of all search traffic.

When considering where you are going to spend resources implementing a search marketing campaign, keep the numbers above in mind.

There is another 26.8% out there that are searching across hundreds of smaller engines, but chasing those visitors, in most cases, is not worth the time and effort. The amount of time you put into setting up campaigns on the smaller engines vs. the value you generate from those efforts usually don’t add up in a positive way.

Stick with promoting your site on the big two (Google and Yahoo!) and you’ll be maximizing your time and resources and generating the best traffic to your site.

Tommy

For those blog readers waiting patiently for an update to this post, here it is…

Thomas William Hunt, born 7/7/06

Mom and baby are doing great. Here’s is a play by play of the birth that I sent out to family and friends:

We’d like to introduce you to our beautiful son…

Thomas William Hunt

Born on Friday, July 7th at 11:35 pm at the University of Michigan Hospital

8 lbs, 2 ounces (1.8 ounces to be exact!)

A long and healthy 22 inches with some seriously long fingers and toes.

Tommy & DadA quick recap:

Mom standing over dad (Me) and waking him up at 5:50 am Friday morning asking if it was time for him to get up for work. Dad thinking to himself, “shouldn’t she be in bed, what’s the matter with her?” (she was up at 4:30 am having some minor contractions…)

9:30 am - Water Breakage, Phone call to dad, Speed Limit Breakage home to Howell.

Arrive at the hospital around 11:30 am, progress slowly but surely through the afternoon and evening. Some pitocin (inducer drug) here, an epidural there (those are wonderful…)

8 cm, 9 cm, 10 cm…push!

30 minutes later, we were looking at him and feeling very blessed.

We’re plenty busy here at the house (got him home at 3:00 pm today/Sunday) and are having a blast with our little guy!

Seth Godin is a Marketing Guru. He writes great books and has an excellent blog that I enjoy reading.

I have always viewed myself as an Entrepreneur. I started a business on my own and work hard to run and grow it. But after reading a recent post by Seth, I realize that I am actually a Small Business Owner versus an Entrepreneur:

Excerpt from the post:

The distinction I’ve always made is that an entrepreneur is trying to make money while she sleeps, and does it with someone else’s money! That she builds a business bigger than herself, that scales for a long time, that is about processes and markets. A small businessperson, on the other hand, is largely a freelancer with support, someone who understands the natural size of her business and wants to enjoy the craft of doing it every day.

The more I see both, the happier it appears that small business people are. They often make more money, take fewer risks, sleep better and build something for the ages, something they believe in and can polish and be proud of.

I found the distinction between the two interesting and thought you might as well. Are you an Entrepreneur or a Small Business Owner?
